Prospective Students

Admission Standards
he Department of Business, Management and Accounting focuses on devoting its limited resources to achieving and maintaining high quality management education programs for students who are likely to benefit from pursuing such programs of study. The focus is also on insuring that each student acquires the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to establish viable careers in a broad range of organizations. The faculty in the Department have adopted admission standards with the expectation that more time, energy, and effort can be devoted to students who are willing and able to participate fully in the learning process.

Overall Objectives

The overall objectives of the Departmental admission standards, effective from the Fall of 2001, are to promote high quality management education while maintaining high retention and graduation rates for students admitted to the programs offered in the Department of Business, Management and Accounting.

Criteria

Students admitted to the University who choose to major in business will be admitted unconditionally to the Department of Business, Management, and Accounting if they have a combined SAT score of 900 or higher on the Math and Verbal sections, or a total of 1350 or higher on the three component scores. Students from other programs in the University can apply to change their major to those in the Department of Business, Management and Accounting if:

       » they have earned 28 semester credit hours with a GPA of 2.5 or higher;
       » they have earned grades of C or higher in MATH 109, ENGL 101, and ENGL 102; and
       » they have has passed the English Proficiency Examination.

Transfer Students

To major in the Department of Business, Management, and Accounting, students transferring to UMES must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be in good standing at their former institution(s). Transfer students with a GPA less than 2.5 will be considered for admission into the Department of Business, Management, and Accounting after earning 28 credits with a 2.5 GPA during the first year of study at UMES. Grades of C or better must be earned in MATH 109, ENGL 101, and ENGL 102, if not completed prior to transferring. Also, the English Proficiency Examination must be passed prior to admission to the Department.
