Irish American Heritage Month

Since 1991, March has been proclaimed Irish American Heritage Month.    The Frederick Douglass Library is sponsoring a display this month honoring Irish American Heritage.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 34 million Americans identify themselves as being of Irish Ancestry.  This makes Irish Americans the second largest ancestry group behind German Americans.  Compare this to the entire population of Ireland which is about 4.2 million people.

The display, located in the front lobby of the library, highlights the contributions of several Irish Americans.  Charles Carroll of Carrollton, from Maryland, was Irish American and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.  F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote the American classic, The Great Gatsby, was Irish American.  Georgia O'Keefe, the famous artist, was Irish American.  The Frederick Douglass Library owns several books that contain compilations of her works.  We encourage you to view the display and then research the accomplishments of Irish Americans for yourself.

The display is to your right when you enter the lobby of the Library in the third display case on the left.  This display will be up only a few more days.  We encourage you to view the display and then research the accomplishments of other Irish Americans for yourself.
