Find Medical & Health Articles

Find Medical Abstracts

LexisNexis® Academic offers a wide range of news, political, legal, business, and medical information in full-text format.  The Medical portion of this database covers:

·       Medical News

·       Medical Journals

·       Abstracts

To access LexisNexis Academic follow these steps:

1.    Go to the Library’s home page. (http://www.umes.edu/fdl).

2.    Click on “Databases” under “Finding Library Materials.”

3.    Select “Alphabetical Listing,” then click on the letter “L.”

4.    Click on LexisNexis Academic.

Click on the word “Medical.”

Once you have entered the "medical" portion of LexisNexis Academic, you may search for medical news, medical journals, and abstracts.

How to Find Medical News

1.    Click on “Medical News."

2.    The search form automatically selects “Medical News” and the news source “Medical & Health News.”

3.     Enter a search term or terms.  You may search for your term in the following fields:

bulletHeadline, Lead Paragraph(s), Terms
bulletHeadline
bulletFull text
bulletCaption
bulletAuthor

  4.       Narrow your search to a specific date range including today, previous week,  previous 6 months, previous year(s) or
    all available dates.

  5.       If you want, you may search for a specific publication.

  6.       Click on

 

You are ready to view your results or you may refine your search using the “Search Within Results” feature.  The default setting for the results is “Sorted by Date.”  You may also choose “Sort By Relevance” to receive the most relevant articles first.

In addition to the title of the article and its publication date, each result includes a brief description of the    content of the article.  To open the article click on the title which had red text.  Once you have opened the article, you may read it online, print it, or email it for later use.

How to Find Articles in Medical & Health Journals

You may use the “Medical & Health Journals link to find articles in journals such as American Family       Physician, Annals of Health Law, Journal of the American Cancer Institute, Lancet, Public Health Reports, and   others.  To conduct a search:

1.       Enter a “Keyword.” 

2.       You may  narrow your search by     adding additional terms.

3.       Leave the “Source” on Medical & Health Journals.  Click on “Source List” to view the journals and to obtain a brief    description of each one.

4.       Enter the date parameters.  You may use the fields provided by LexisNexis or narrow to a specific date range.

5.    Click on . 

You may narrow your search results, by adding an additional term(s) to "Search Within Results."

The results include the number of documents retrieved in the upper right-hand corner.  In addition to the title, each entry includes the name of the journal, date of publication, issue number, pages, number of words in the article, and the author(s).  The Medical & Health Journals results page does not include an abstract of the    article.  To view the article in its entirety, click on the title (in red).  The articles may be printed or emailed.

How to Find Medical Abstracts

Medical Abstracts allows you to search the abstracts of Medline from 1966 to the present.  Medline is      published by the National Library of Medicine.  This search form will search all Medline Reference.  Click on the “TIPS” link for an alphabetical listing of the topics covered in Medline.

1.       To search Medical Abstracts either enter a keyword or use the drop down menu to change the search to author.

2.       You may add an additional term to narrow your search.  When “Additional Terms” are entered, the entire abstract is searched.

3.    You may limit the "Source" searched to Medline® Reference (default), Allergy & Hypersensitivity, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology/Metabolism/Reproduction, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, General and Internal Medicine, Hematology, Infectious/Communicable Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Nursing, OB/GYN, Oncology/Neoplasm, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology, Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics/Perinatology/Adolescent Medicine, Pharmacy, Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Psychology/Psychoanalysis, Environmental/Occupational Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Radiology, Rheumatology, Basic Life Science, Sports Medicine, Surgery, Urology, Veterinary Medicine, or All Other Subjects.

3.       Select the date for your search.  You may use the default search (previous six months) or search for a shorter or longer period of time.  You may also use the From and To fields to limit to a specific date range.

4.       Click on “Search.”

 Once you receive your results.  You may narrow your search further using the “Search Within Results” box.  You may also switch the delivery of your results from the default (by date) to sorted by relevance.  The results include the title of the article, author(s), name of the journal, date of publication, volume number,   issue number and page numbers.   Click on the article title to retrieve the abstract. 

Once you have decided on an article, you may print or email it.  Remember the journal title is listed using the American Medical Association (AMA) format.  For example, article 1 above lists the journal as “J Med Virol”  which stands for Journal of Medical Virology.
