The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is currently accepting resumes for a full-time, twelve month position. Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications. The Chair will report to the Dean, School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences.
Responsibilities: The chair is responsible for the administrative leadership of three undergraduate degree programs. He/she also shares joint responsibility with the Department of Human Ecology for a M.S. program in Food and Agricultural Sciences and a Ph.D. in Food Science and Technology. Other responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses; conducting research/scholarship; leadership for external funding; recruitment, retention and timely graduation of students; new program development; curriculum development; strategic planning and implementation; representation of the department at the university, as well as stakeholder groups and industry; department oversight; faculty and staff recruitment and evaluation; and coordination and supervision of undergraduate and graduate instruction. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Agriculture or related discipline is required. Candidate must have a record of scholarly achievements, including a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, receiving and managing competitive external funding, effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, and advising graduate students at a level that will qualify the individual to be tenured as an associate professor in the Department. Candidates must show evidence of administrative ability and experience in academia, including the ability to lead through effectively working and communicating with faculty, staff and students in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment. Candidates must have a strong commitment to student learning and faculty innovation in achieving learning to enhance undergraduate student performance, particularly in retention and graduation rates. Candidates must have a commitment to promote faculty development and strengthen the research efforts of a multidisciplinary department, and be familiar with current compliance and certification standards in science. Candidates must show strong leadership and communication skills including writing skills and public speaking to diverse audiences and have highly developed interpersonal skills. Demonstrated capacity in strategic planning and implementation with measurable outcomes is desired. Ability to get along with others required.
