Katrina DisasterThe University of Maryland Eastern Shore will admit students from Maryland, Delaware or Virginia adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina. Students, whose institutions have closed for the fall semester or who are facing educational hardships due to curtailed class schedules, loss of employment, or personal or family difficulties arising from this storm, will be offered waivers of the University’s application fees. Late applications will be processed on a case-by-case basis.

Students interested in attending the University of Maryland Eastern Shore should contact Ms. Cheryll Collier-Mills, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, at 410-651-8466.

On-going efforts coordinated by members of the UMES community on behalf of victims of Hurricane Katrina are as follows:

  • The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s student chapter of the Lion’s Club in conjunction with the Lion’s Clubs of America is gathering items and money to send to the Louisiana Hurricane Katrina Survivors. The Lion’s Club has secured a trailer that will be driven by a volunteer truck driver to southern Louisiana. Donated items sought include: baby food, diapers, baby powder, disposable wipes, non-perishable food, bottled water, toiletries, medical supplies, etc. Food donations must be readily edible, not requiring cooking of any kind. For monetary donations, checks should be made out to the Lions 22-B Charitable Foundation with Hurricane Katrina Relief noted on the “Memo” line. Intended shipment date is of September 9.
