UMES Wind Ensemble in Concert
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. John R. Lamkin II, will present its annual fall concert on Wednesday, November 14, at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of the Ella Fitzgerald Center of the Performing Arts.
The concert features a wide variety of concert band pieces, including “March Jubiloso” by Darren W. Jenkins, “Winged Victory (Beacons of Light)” by Brian Balmages, a rousing original by Samuel R. Hazo titled “Rush,” a haunting Alfred Reed composition titled “Giligia” and Derek Bourgeois’ composition titled “Romance” for alto saxophone that will feature Mark Sherman, a junior music education major on alto saxophone.
The wind ensemble will combine with the UMES Concert Choir and present the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” arranged by James Neilson and the ever famous Hallelujah Chorus from George Frederick Handel’s Oratorio “Messiah.” In celebration of the upcoming Christmas season, the band will present several holiday favorites including Claude T. Smith’s “Symphonic Prelude on AdesteFidelis” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” by Robert W. Smith. The concert concludes when the choir and the audience are invited to join in on James Ployhar’s “Christmas ‘Pop’ Sing-Along.”
The 2007 Wind Ensemble comprises 45 members, many of whom are music education majors. The personnel also include faculty members Gregory Perez, woodwinds; Ted Nichols, percussion; and several high school and community musicians.
The Fine Arts Department invites the community to the fall 2007 edition of the UMES Wind Ensemble in concert in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, November 14, at 8 p.m. Donations are welcome, but the concert is free and open to the public.
