Vilson Awarded Single Parent Scholarship
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Fred Vilson, a junior physical therapy major at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, has been awarded a $1,500 Denny's/Tom Joyner Foundation Single Parent Scholarship.
A native of Hurlock, MD, Vilson is a full-time student and the single father of a 3-month-old son, Zakai Mar'Kee. In addition to his studies at UMES, he is a member of the Exercise Science Club and the Student Ambassador Committee. After completing his bachelor's degree, he plans to pursue a career as a chiropractor.
Denny's Restaurant is proud to partner with the Tom Joyner Foundation in supporting the Single Parent Student Scholarship Program. Throughout the month of August, four to six single parent scholarships will be awarded to UMES students.
The Tom Joyner Foundation, www.blackamericaweb.com/foundation, has raised more than $25 million over the past seven years to help thousands of students at some 80 historically black colleges. Over the past month, it has presented more than $1 million to several colleges, including Harris Stowe College in St. Louis, Mo., LeMoyne Owen College in Memphis, Tenn., and Lane College in Jackson, Tenn.
