UMES Presents Spring Chamber Ensemble Recital
PRINCESS ANNE, MD- May 4, 2010-Under the direction of woodwinds instructor Brian Perez, the UMES Saxophone Quartet performed at this year’s 33rd annual Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Va.
The event, hosted by the U.S. Navy Band, is the largest saxophone convention in the country and featured some of the world’s top musicians, including Timothy Roberts, Seamus Blake and Philippe Geiss.
“The amount of talent of the performers was astonishing,” said Mark Sherman, music education graduate, who plays baritone saxophone. “I believe that elevated our own performance to a higher level than we had been playing.”
This month, members of the UMES Saxophone Quartet are scheduled to perform in a two-day concert event.
On Tuesday, May 11, the Jazz Combo Concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center theatre. The performance will feature original works by members of the ensemble and pieces by musicians such as Jeremy Pelt, Charles Mingus, and Herbie Hancock.
The Faculty Jazz Combo, which includes Perez on saxophone, Dr. John R. Lamkin II on trumpet, David Lowe on bass, and Patrick McHenry on drums, will also play six musical selections during the concert.
On Wednesday, May 12, the Spring Chamber Ensemble Recital will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center theatre.
Sponsored by the UMES Music Department, the recital features the UMES woodwind quintet, saxophone quartet and brass quintet. Works of classical composers Eugene Bozza and Astor Piazzolla will be performed.
Both concerts are free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, call 410-651-6669.
