By the time Andriy Tkachenko decided it was time to leave Europe to expand his research interests in aquatic animals, he d already worked as a soil scientist at the National Academy of Sciences in Ukraine. He started his master s program at Central European University in Hungary and then transferred and got his degree at University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. And one day, when he decided to search the Internet again, trying to find a university he hoped would have matching research interests, he came across the website of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and read that Dr.Yan Waguespack, a scientist at this American university, was engaged in the research work he so dearly loved. It was a perfect moment, because with a perfect hit he d found the perfect match. Tkachenko packed up and left his town of Bila Tservka, translated white church in English, and so named because miles into his journey, he could still see the steeple of the white church just below the sky. His wife, Ganna, would join him later as a master s student in the Applied Computer Science program at UMES.

| UMES Doctoral Student Contributes to Breast Cancer Research |
As a little girl in Mashad, a town in her native Iran, Maryam Taabodi was a picky eater searching her food to find and eat only those things she felt had nutritional value. Now a grown woman, she has escalated this search to researching for findings of a different sort if indeed, grapefruit has a substance that can kill breast cancer cells. The project, started by UMES Professor Dr. Kelly Mack, examines research suggestions that naringenin, the flavonoid in grape fruit and other citrus fruits, possesses potential chemotherapeutic and cancer preventive value as it can inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells regardless of estrogen receptor status. But, since no-one knows for sure how the flavonoid attacks the tumor cells, Taabodi s quest is to determine how.

| UMES Carves out 20 Acres of Arid Land for 2.1 MW Solar Farm |
PRINCESS ANNE. MD (AUGUST 5, 2009) University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) today announced plans to develop a photovoltaic solar farm on 20 acres of land on the University s campus. SunEdison, North America s largest solar energy services provider, will finance, build, operate and maintain the 2.1-megawatt system under a solar power service agreement (SPSA). It will be the largest renewable energy project in Maryland and will provide UMES with long-term predictably priced solar-generated energy. Under the SunEdison SPSA, the solar plant will require no upfront capital investment by the University. Construction is scheduled to begin in early September with anticipated completion by the end of 2009.

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Some 800 mourners traveled to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus and its Metropolitan United Methodist Church during two days of mourning for educator and humanitarian, Dr. William Percy Hytche Sr. Educators, legislators, clergy and UMES faculty, staff and students joined family, friends and well-wishers to celebrate a life decorated with vast accomplishment. After an extended illness, the once tireless educator died peacefully in his home on Sunday, July 15.

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Students from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore recently attended the 14th annual Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) Research Showcase. PRINCESS ANNE, MD - With major funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and its non-profit affiliate Maryland Hawk Corporation are undertaking a project with AviHome LLC of Salisbury to build “the poultry house of the future.” A pilot house that can be retrofitted to existing chicken houses will be built on the campus in Princess Anne. The new products consist of new flooring and a new ventilation system. The UMES Poultry Research Center, under the direction of Dr. Jeannine Harter-Dennis, will raise broilers and conduct technical production and economic and environmental tests in the new Environmental Poultry House, where the various construction elements will be assembled.
