The campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore was the host site for two major class reunions this year.  The class of 1974 held its 30th year reunion on June 10,11 and 12.  Thirty-two members of this class came back to the campus and enjoyed a walk down memory lane with videos and nostalgic music, good  food, fun and fellowship. Members toured the campus, enjoyed a cookout and dinner and spent time just reminiscing.

Norris Connelly, who serves as class president, led the group in a meeting which emphasized the need to seriously consider a structured effort to give back to the University.  Members of the reunion committee were Marvin Jones, Sr., Susan Quarles, Anthony Jones, Margaret Harris, Wilhelmina Cornish, Jennifer Reed, Alfonso Cornish, Norris

Connelly, Sherman Lambert, Joyce Gates, Alphonso Hawkins, Walter Jones, Patricia Parker, Maria Jones, Leslie Stanton, Paul Trotter and John Wilson.

Following close behind in the month of Augut was the Class of 1961 celebrating 43 years. Spearheading this effort was Beverly Jones from Kentucky.  Some of the highlights of this reunion included a trip to Ocean City for lunch, a class picture taken with President Thompson and a dinner dance complete with place cards from yearbook pictures of each member in attendance.  Pictures of children and grandchildren and other family members were displayed in the lobby.

Lots of laughs ensued when Beverly displayed a letter sweater and skirt that she wore back in 1961.  The class viewed a heart-warming video of old loves and a

memorial to those who had passed on.  All in all, everyone had  a great time! A total of 52 alumni and guests attended the events August 3,4,5and 6 and this was the first class ever to attempt a mid-week reunion.  They all marveled at the many changes which have taken place on this campus in the last forty years.  Interested in planning a reunion? On Saturday, September 11,  alumni, administrators, faculty and staff  were treated to a full-day workshop  on fundraising strategies.  The workshop was made possible by a $5,000 grant received from  the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and The Lily Endowment.  The Office of Alumni Affairs submitted the proposal and was responsible for facilitating the activities.  Charles Stevens, managing partner for Skystone Ryan, Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia and faculty member of

the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy led the training.  Participants were treated to a thorough interactive discussion of fundraising strategies and suggestions on improving the situation at their respective institutions.

UMES is especially grateful to have received this funding in light of the fact that this year begins a serious effort to launch and maintain the Annual Fund. The Division of Institutional

Advancement has been charged with increasing our alumni giving rate, re-establishing alumni chapters, creating new chapters and generally promoting good will among our alumni.  If you are interested in establishing a chapter, please call the Office of Alumni Affairs at 410-651-7686.
