Proposed UMES Course Repeat Policy

The following policies apply to ALL courses that may be repeated:

1.                  There is a limit to the number of times a student may repeat a course.  Students may have two repeats of any course in which they earned an A, B, C, D, F, P, S, W, I, or NGR. In other words: Students cannot register for any given course more than three times. Student shall be considered registered for a course if he/she is enrolled in the course beyond the end of the DROP period.

2.                  Students may repeat no more than 30 credits.

3.                  The grade point average will include all attempts at a given course that result in a grade of A, B, C, D, or F. However, if the course being repeated was originally taken within the student’s first year at UMES, the student’s GPA will be calculated using the higher grade. Please note that only the courses repeated at UMES or at a University System of Maryland institution can be used for replacement in the cumulative GPA calculation.

4.                  Grades earned in all repeated courses will appear on the student’s transcript regardless of whether the grade is dropped from, or averaged into the cumulative GPA. If a student repeats a course in which he or she has already earned a grade, the subsequent attempt shall not increase the total hours earned toward the degree.

5.                  If a course in which a student wishes to repeat has been discontinued or has not been offered for two consecutive semesters, the student may request the department chair to designate a substitute course. The department chair should report the course so designated and the student for whom the course is being substituted to Admissions and Registration.

6.                  For any unusual circumstances, the office of Academic Affairs may grant exceptions to these policies. Approval for these exceptions must be obtained prior to enrollment in the course.
