Mr. Alverne W.
Chesterfield is a native of St.
Thomas, United States, Virgin Islands and a graduate of Charlotte Amalie High
School. He came to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to further his
education in August 1973. His course studies were completed in December 1976
and he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in May 1977.
I n
January 1977, his professional career began when Robert Dowery, then Dean of
Student Affairs, asked him to remain at UMES and run Wicomico Hall as a
Residence Counselor within the Office of Residence Life, a position he held
until August 1980. In 1980, he assumed the position of Area
Coordinator/Counselor for the Student Apartments at UMES. In July 1985, he was
promoted to Assistant Director, Office of Residence Life. During this period he
earned a Master’s of Science in Management, with a concentration in Public
Administration (1994) from Wilmington College. He remained as the Assistant
Director of Residence Life until August 1994 when he was selected to serve as
Director of Auxiliary Enterprises, a newly created department. In July 1995, he
was promoted to the position of Assistant Vice President for
Administrative Affairs while retaining his position as Director of
Auxiliary Enterprises.
During his tenure here at the University,
Mr.Chesterfield has also served in various positions with the Upward Bound
Program including Assistant Project Director (1979 – 1982), Adjunct Faculty with
the Department of Business and Economics and Founder and Administrator of
Student Security. He is a member of the
National Association of College Auxiliary Services (NACUS) and Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc.
