Breaking Barriers Statement As an international, literary conference, Breaking Barriers provides an opportunity for crossing cultural and language barriers in a way no other literary conference in the U.S. does. It invites discussion on crossing boundaries of ethnicity, gender and class as well as genres, periods and disciplines. Primarily a literary conference, Breaking Barriers also welcomes papers from both students and faculty on non-literary topics, including engineering, human ecology and sociology, as long as these involve breaking barriers. For example, papers on service-learning in which university students explain engineering projects to high school students or tell how they engage in interaction with those from ethnic backgrounds different from their own are both appropriate for the Conference. We invite your attendance and participation. The conference registration fee, including the reception banquet is $165.00 due by August 1, 1999 (includes bound copy of the Conference Proceedings). Abstracts are due by June 15, 1999. They may be submitted by E-mail by contacting the CONFERENCE COORDINATOR, by fax at 410.651.6650 (Attention Breaking Barriers), or by snail mail to: Dr. Susan Harrington Department of English and Modern Languages University of Maryland Eastern Shore Princess Anne, MD 21853 Please make checks payable to: UMES and forward to: UMES, 13801 Coastal Hwy.
