Hammett Worthington-Smith Lesbianism Examined In "Long Time Since Yesterday" (P. J. Gibson) Since the gathering of ladies in "Long Time Since Yesterday" is tantamount to a class reunion, one observes that reminiscing is minimal. The ladies, in spite of their achievements - which are not to be sneezed at - discuss many of their anxieties: psychological wounds from their formative years as well as in subsequent years: sex, death, the image of man, religion, life, and suicide - to name a few. Probably, then, P. J. Gibson in "Long Time Since Yesterday" is using the play to present ideas relative to crucial issues of the day. It is not until the end of the play that one realizes definitely that lesbianism is a central theme unfolding in the play. An excellence of "Long Time Since Yesterday" lies in its structure. The use of screen-flashbacks fills in essential information as characters interact. Through screen-flashbacks, one senses that which is being filled-in is in the present. A great psychological depth is given each character as each interacts. Through the use of screen-flashbacks, the subtle elements within the play lead one toward comprehending the dynamics in P. J. Gibson's presentation. Return to Session XII BB Program |
