  President's Family Picnic will be held on Tuesday the 27th of August 2002 in front of the Student Services Center.

Fellowship Program

A fellowship for emerging social justice leaders who want to understand, live, and shape the social justice movement. The fellowship is a new leadership development program designed to place contemporary and future social justice struggles within a national and historical context. Civil Rights Summer is currently seeking applicants who will be rising sophomores or juniors by summer 2001.

 

Program description:  The fellowship begins June 8, 2001 at Harvard University with a week of academic study and leadership training. The group travels to Washington, D.C. for seven weeks where they will continue their studies while interning in policy-shaping national organizations. Fellows will return to their campuses motivated to play a leadership role, supported by their new knowledge and skills and a large network of CRS peers and mentors. CRS provides housing and transportation; Fellows will also receive a stipend of $120.00 per week for incentals and a $1500.00 scholarship at the end of the fellowship. Scholarship

The following is a list of scholarships available through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

For more information, please contact the Financial Aid Office, located on the second floor of Bird Hall (phone: 410-651-6172). The Financial Aid Office can provide further information about the availability of scholarships. It is recommended that students make an appointment with the Financial Aid Office early so that funding deadlines are met.

 

Alliance for Minority Participation Scholarship
Source: National Science Foundation
Award: Room, Board, & Tuition
Criteria: Freshman minority student majoring in biology, chemistry, nutrition, animal science, plant science, math, or computer science; competitive SAT & high school GPA.

Honors Program Scholarship
Source: University Funded
Award: variable; renewable or three years providing student maintains at least a 3.0 GPA per semester.
Criteria: Admissions to The Honors Program. Priority given to students pursuing a major in a health/science area.

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Award

Award: $4,000 per year

UMES Endowed Scholarships

UMES has available many partial scholarships from endowments established by alumni, faculty and distinguished people associated with the University. Amounts for each scholarship vary each year according to the interest generated by the endowment. More specific information can be provided by the contacts for each scholarship.

The Dr. and Mrs. Imtiaz Ahmad Business Scholarship
Established by business and economics professor Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad and his wife to assist business students at UMES.
Award: variable
Criteria: Open to all UMES business students. Candidates selected on the basis of need, character and scholarship and potential services in some area of business by a committee appointed by the Vice and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice President of Student Affairs, and Dr. and Mrs. Imtiaz Ahmad.

American Hotel Foundation Scholarships
Award: many scholarships available, amounts vary.
Criteria: Complete scholarship information is available from the HRM Department office. Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in the HRM program. A department committee notifies students of their eligibility and provides forms and guidelines for application. Awards are usually for the following school year.

American Hotel and Motel Association Statler Award
Award: $275 - $350
Criteria: Must be a full-time enrolled student in the HRM program. Candidates are selected by a department committee which then submits five names to Statler headquarters for final approval.

American Hotel and Motel Association Maryland Chapter Award
Award: $250/semester (2 semester limit)
Criteria: Awarded to a junior/senior HRM major with a 3.0 or better GPA who has graduated from a Maryland high school. (Many state chapters have similar Ah&MA awards.)

Hotel Restaurant Management Academic Scholarships
Award: $250/semester (2 semester limit)
Criteria: Open to incoming freshmen and transfer scholarships with a minimum 3.0 GPA or 1000 or better SAT score. Qualifying students are notified by the HRM department of their eligibility.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Scholarships Funds

Baltimore Chapter Associated Builders and Contractors Fund

Michael G. Calla Endowed Scholarship Fund
(established by the Cumberland Valley ABC Chapter)

Charles Milton Epenshade Scholarship Fund
(established by the Eastern Shore ABC Chapter)
Award: $600-700 annually for all ABC scholarships (depending upon endowment interest)
Criteria: Awarded to junior/senior level construction management/technology students based on academic standing and need. Students must reapply each year.

Theodore Briggs Student Support Grant
Given in memory of the late Mr. Theodore Briggs, who started UMES's building construction program and served as its coordinator until 1975.
Amount: $500 annually
Criteria: Sophomore/junior level construction management/technology major in good academic standing who demonstrates a strong sense of dedication to construction education.

Nathaniel Burks Emergency Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Nathaniel Burks, jeweler, and husband of the late faculty emeritus Dr. Mary Fair Burks
Award: variable
Criteria: Open for emergency use by English Art, and Music students for tuition or books.
Contact: Dr. Gerald Johnson, Chair, Department of Fine Arts.

Altheia Elps Scholarship Fund
Established in the memory of former Human Ecology faculty member Alethia Elps.
Award: $500 (awarded in two installments of $250 dollars)
Criteria: Student must be an incoming freshman fashion merchandising major with a 3.0 GPA. A semester average of 3.0 or better must be achieved in order to receive the second semester installment.

The Ella Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund
Established by the renowned jazz vocalist, this scholarship is given annually to music education majors.
Award: (variable, depending upon endowment interest)
Criteria: Available to upper level music education majors who demonstrate potential for advancement in the field. Selections are made by music department faculty.
Contact: The Department of Fine Arts.

The Herman Franklin Award for Excellence
Established by Dr. Herman Franklin, Vice President for Student Affairs.
Award: $100, annual
Criteria: Awarded to recognize superior student performance by a student resident assistant who has demonstrated the ability to maintain a high GPA and displays outstanding potential for leadership and service. Selections are made by the Residence Life Staff.

Richard A. Henson Scholarship
Award: 4 year full scholarship (tuition, fees, room and board, including books and educational fees)
Criteria: Open to students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievements and leadership potential. Complete criteria are available from the office of Admissions and Registration.

Human Ecology Alumni Scholarship Fund
Award: $250
Criteria: Offered by Human Ecology Alumni and available to students sophomore level or higher who must have earned at least a 3.o average for the academic year prior to the award. Other factors considered extra-curricular, civic, and community activities. Applicants must apply by April 15 for the following academic year.

Thomas H. Kiah Scholarship Award
Established in memory of Thomas H. Kiah, fifth head of the institution.
Award: (partial scholarship, variable with endowment interest)
Criteria: Good academic standing and judged to have been most effective in the improvement of interpersonal and human relationships during the year.

The Links Scholarship
Established by the Princess Anne Chapter of Links, Inc.
Award: partial scholarship, variable.
Criteria: Potential for satisfactory academic progress, verified need for funds.

Dr. Claude Marion Scholarship Fund
Established by Agriculture Alumni in honor of Dr. Marion, retired director of the 1890 Extension Program.
Award: partial scholarship, variable according to endowment interest.
Criteria: Open to agriculture majors. Award based on scholarship and need.

Charlotte Newcombe Scholarships
Award: $50-$600
Criteria: scholarships given to career women returning to school to pursue a second career who have completed at least half of the credits toward their undergraduate degree.
Contact: Office of Student Financial Aid or the Counseling Center

The Daniel J. Pinkett Award in Mathematics
Established by Mrs. Alice P. MacLeod.
Award: cash prize at graduation
Criteria: recipient is a graduating mathematics/computer science major who has excelled in the field. Selections are made by the mathematics/computer science faculty.

The J. Vinton Schaefer Endowed Scholarship Fund
Established in memory of Baltimore Area Contractor 1. Vinton Schaefer.
Award:$300-$400 annually (variable)
Criteria: For upper level construction management/technology students who demonstrate outstanding potential. Recipients selected by construction management staff.

The Seidel Award in Computer Science
Established by prominent Salisbury are businessman Samuel W. Seidel
Award: $600 (variable with endowment interest)
Criteria: For academically talented upper-level computer science majors from the Eastern Shore. Selections made by the computer science faculty.
Contact: Chair of Department of Computer Sciences and Engineering.

Otis and Dorothy B. Strozier Scholarship Fund
Award: partial scholarship, amount varies
Criteria: need based

The Samuel S. Trott Scholarship Fund
Established by Samuel Trott, UMES alumnus and noted educator in Henry County, Virginia. Selection is made by the UMES Scholarship Committee with the advice and consent of the Samuel S. Trott Scholarship Committee.

Winslow Foundation Scholarship
Award: variable, $50-$1500 per academic year.
Criteria: Awards based on academic performance, personal dedication to the field of Poultry Technology and Management or General Agriculture, and/or financial need. First consideration is given to Maryland, District of Columbia, and North Carolina residents. Applications should be filed by March 1 to receive full consideration.

The National Security Education Program (NSEP) offers undergraduate scholarships, a minimum of $6,000 a year, as well as graduate fellowships to 79 world regions in languages and fields of study deemed critical to US national security.

All recipients of NSEP awards are required to work for an agency of the federal government with national security responsibilities after they have completed their overseas experience.

Applicants must be US citizens and preference will be given to those applicants who are engaged in the above fields of study.
