Degree Requirements

The Master of Science degree is granted upon completion of a thesis or a non-thesis option. The thesis option requires the successful completion of twenty four (24) semester hours of course work and a minimum of six (6) hours of credit on an original thesis. A successful oral defense of the thesis is also required. The non-thesis option requires the successful completion of thirty-six (36) credit hours of course work. Both options require that the student successfully pass a comprehensive examination. Students enrolled on a full-time basis may complete the program in one to two years. Once admitted into the program, the following four (4) core courses are required:

  • MCCJ 600 Proseminar in Criminology and Criminal Justice (3 hours)
  • MCCJ 620 Theoretical Perspectives on Crime and Justice (3 hours)
  • MCCJ 630 Research Methods and Statistics (3 hours)
  • MCCJ 640 Minorities, Crime, and Justice (3 hours)

The total number of credit hours required for the thesis option is 30 and 36 for the non-thesis option.
