PRAXIS I AND II

For UMES Teacher Candidates

WHAT, WHY, HOW and WHERE?

What is the PRAXIS?
The Praxis Series are assessments for teacher candidates administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS). The number of assessments required depends on the content area in which a candidate will teach. Praxis I assesses basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills and a passing score is required for all teacher education candidates. Praxis II assesses subject matter and pedagogy skills in one of 25 content areas. In content areas without an assessment (e.g., Agriculture), the teacher candidates only need to pass Praxis I. The State Board of Education approved qualifying composite scores effective July 1, 2002. Candidates who have taken Praxis I prior to July 1, 2002 and did not pass all three tests may resubmit their scores for approval. The composite score is defined as the combined total of the state qualifying scores on the three basic skills tests. The combined, composite score for candidates who have taken the paper and pencil test is 527, for the computer-based test, the score is 966. As of January 1, 2002 there will only be one version of the test given and this will be computer generated.

Why do I need the PRAXIS
These tests are required by state departments of education of colleges and universities to measure the academic achievement and proficiency of individuals entering or completing teacher preparation programs.

How can I study for the PRAXIS?
Currently, there is a Praxis Lab available for UMES students to practice taking the Praxis I exam. Praxis workshops will be offered throughout the semester for UMES students. To sign up for a workshop or obtain for more information, please contact the Praxis Coordinator, Mr. Michael Nugent, at 410-651-8362 or email at manugent@mail.umes.edu

Where can I take the PRAXIS?
ETS administers the assessments six Saturdays per year — September 21, November 23, January 11, March 8, April 26 and June 28th — at 14 test sites in Maryland located within two- and four-year institutions of higher education. Test sites and dates are listed in ETS's free annual publication, the Registration Bulletin or on the website at www.teachingandlearning.org .

The Praxis is also offered at any Sylvan Learning Center. A person must wait sixty (60) days to retake a test if they do not pass a test at Sylvan. The number for the Salisbury, MD location is 410-341-4100.
