| The Professional Education Unit Programs at UMES are
currently working towards NCATE accreditation. The National
Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
helps establish high quality teacher preparation. Through
the process of professional accreditation of schools,
colleges and departments of education, NCATE works to
make a difference in the quality of teaching and teacher
preparation today, tomorrow, and for the next century.
NCATE’s performance-based system of accreditation
fosters competent classroom teachers and other educators
who work to improve the education of all P–12 students.
NCATE believes every student deserves a caring, competent,
and highly qualified teacher.
In
the Fall of 2003 (November 1st through November
5th, 2003) a team of evaluators will visit the UMES
campus to talk with students, faculty, alumni and the
community about the professional education unit programs
and the impact they make. As part of the NCATE process,
UMES has been working on a conceptual framework that

unit programs produce in terms of candidates. The conceptual
framework for the Professional Education Unit at the
University of Maryland Eastern Shore is:

and intensive academic preparation. They continuously reflect on and evaluate their practices and demonstrate
a willingness to make changes that enhance student growth
and learning. Moreover, candidates are innovative in
employing the best contemporary practices using creative
problem-solving techniques and connections to real world
experiences. Our paradigm for valuing diversity centers
around understanding and interacting with individuals
in various educational, social and cultural environments.
Finally, our candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills
