What are they:
The mission of the Professional Development School (PDS) is lifelong learning. The PDS provides a place where future teachers, practicing teachers and college/university faculties learn together along with their students. Future teachers desiring to participate in a PDS may be undergraduate or graduate students, depending upon their college/university's program. They take part in a year-long internship, and take part throughout the year in all aspects of the school's culture.

The Department of Education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has developed Professional Development Schools (PDS) with a number of schools in the local community. Currently, there is a multi-site Professional Development School in Wicomico County (Salisbury, Maryland) at Prince Street Elementary, Bennett Middle and Parkside High School. What are the benefits of a PDS:
Students enrolled in a PDS benefit from being taught by teachers who are focused on teaching excellence. In addition, PDSs have additional resources in terms of materials and the number of adults working with children. Future teachers participate in extended internships which enable them to truly experience all aspects of teaching. Finally, opportunities are provided for continued growth and development for current teachers and college and university faculties. Teacher education programs also benefit through having increased involvement in the schools.
