Research Port Basics

Research Port is a portal or gateway which allows you to connect to the library’s resources from any location whether you are on or off campus.  You must register your I.D. card with the library to access Research Port from off campus.  To register your card go to the Circulation Desk on the first floor.  The purpose of this handout is to teach you the basics of using Research Port.  This handout will cover:

Go to the library’s home page:  http://www.umes.edu/fdl/ then select Off Campus Access via Research Port" under "Finding Library Materials." 

Should You Log In to Research Port?

Yes!  To access Research Port from off-campus you must log in.  While it is not required on campus, logging in allows you to use “My Research Port” to save your favorite databases, save searches for later use, to save your favorite e-journals, and to set your preferences. 

How to Log In to Research Port

1.   Click on University of Maryland, Eastern Shore

2.  Type your barcode number from you student ID card.  It begins with 2143

3.  Type your last name on the second line.

4.  Click on "log in."

How to Conduct Searches in Research Port

1.   Select a “Subject Category”

2.  Select a "Subcategory" if applicable and press .

 

3.  Scroll through the list of database names.  Once you decide on a database, you may click on the database name to enter the native interface OR click on the magnifying glass to use the Research Port interface.

4. If you are using the native interface, search as you would in the library.  If you are using the Research Port interface select either “Simple” or “Advanced,” fill in your search and click “GO.”

How to View Your Results

1. When the search is complete the results will be displayed in one of three ways, depending on your preferences.  Table View is the default option. (See below).  It includes the author, title of the article, year of publication, the name of the database in which it was found, and the option to add to My Research Port for later access as well as the "find it" button. The "Brief View" option (see below) includes the article title, author, journal title including column, issue , page numbers, date of publication, database name,  the ability to add the article to ?My Research Port" and the "find it" button.

"Detailed View" shows the complete bibliographic information one record at a time.  It also includes an abstract of the article, subject headings, and the text if the article is available in full-text in the database you are searching.  The "find it" button is also given in case you need to search for the article in other databases.

How to Retrieve an Article

To retrieve an article click on the  button. One of three options will appear:

  1. The article is available in full text.  A link to the database(s) it is available in will be given.  Click the "GO" button to access the article.  A new window will open with the full text.  You may print, email or save the article at this point.

2.   The article is available in the Frederick Douglass Library.  Click on the "GO" button to access the library catalog.

 

3.  The article is unavailable through the databases or library catalog.  A link for ILLiad (Inter-library Loan) will be provided. 

Do not forget to check the library catalog before sending an Inter-Library Loan request.  A link is provided on the SFX/Find It screen.
