"His story is an incredible
one of victory. In it, he offers hints and clues, and gives outright secrets
as to how one can overcome the 'worst' to grow up to be the 'best.'"

Radio didn't come
along until later, so there was no external force to entertain us - just
ourselves. I remember when a neighbor got the first radio in the community
and played it for another neighbor. He came by our house almost out of
breath and said in a whisper, "Be careful what you say around here because
Ben Dedman has a gadget that tells everything you say."

The next day, with
my parents' blessings, I headed off for LU. Mama had given me a big hug,
and my father, shaking my hand, had said, "We'll be praying for you, son,
that you can find some way to stay out there." We all knew that if I didn't
find a job at LU, I would be on my way back.

I was in the Hawk's
Nest when I heard the commotion. I rushed to see what was going on. I
saw Dr. Baron kneeling beside the epileptic student. Both were dripping
wet and in danger of getting slammed by the water surge again. I left
the Hawk's Nest, and went down the hill to assist Dr. Baron. When I finished
and started back to the Next, the firemen turned the hoses on me. The
powerful thrust knocked me flat on my back.

I don't know if I've
ever wanted to become a college president, or had been inspired to become
one. Actually, I don't think it ever crossed my mind. If anything, I had
been inspired from an early age to be of service to someone other than
myself. This ideal was only taken to a higher level where I made the transition
from college instructor, to professor, to acting chancellor in July of
1975 and to permanent chancellor in 1976. The opportunity came to me without
my pursuance.
