Goal 1. Make globalization an integral part of UMES’
mission and strategic plan.
a. Make a formal globalization commitment in UMES’ mission
statement.
b. Establish an international education advisory council.
c. Incorporate globalization criteria into the internal assessments
and external accreditation process.
d. Assess the infrastructure needs to support international
education throughout the institution.
e. Establish a budget allocation process to support university-wide
international education efforts.
Goal 2. Internationalize the curriculum and promote greater
involvement of all students in significant international education
experiences.
a. Engage and collaborate in university and/or international
consortium activities for most students to have access to overseas
experiences (i.e. study abroad, research, internship, student teaching, and
service learning).
b. Establish international experience targets by number of students
and/or percentage of graduating classes with overseas experiences.
c. Develop a monitoring and tracking system to measure the
value-added dimensions of the experiences, such as enhanced career prospects
and language skill applications.
d. Provide opportunities for graduate students to research and
produce theses and dissertations related to international topics.
e. Require an international component as a General Education degree
requirement (i.e. emerging issues) for all students.
f. Encourage the development of curricula that will reflect the
ever growing global interconnectedness (e.g. international courses and
courses with international content will be considered as part of the core
curriculum and the global aspect will be reflected in all disciplines).
Goal 3. Assure that research and scholarship pertaining to
international matters permeate disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields.
a. Encourage faculty to include an international dimension in their
research.
b. Promote and encourage collaborative research with foreign
scholars.
c. Ensure that library holdings include scholarly international
publications.
d. Include and promote the use of international electronic
databases.
Goal 4. Create and maintain a stimulating and supportive
academic and cultural environment for international students and scholars.
a.
Ensure an adequate infrastructure to support students and scholars
from abroad (e.g., advising, orientation, and counseling).
b.
Develop and maintain a range of credit and noncredit cross-cultural
programs for students.
c. Assign
the responsibilities regarding immigration and visas to the Center for
International Education.
d.
Seek external funds to establish endowed scholarships and fellowships
for international students and scholars.
Goal 5. Increase the international activity of faculty and
staff.
a.
Establish an endowed “Global Growth Fund” to support faculty and
professional staff to engage in international education activities.
b.
Assist faculty and professionals to integrate international
experiences into their professional and career paths.
c.
Recognize faculty and staff international accomplishments.
d.
Develop grants seeking mechanism to track grants and programs that
support international research capabilities.
e.
Establish a “spoken” foreign language laboratory with emphasis on
speaking (verbal) capacity for faculty, staff and university community.
Goal 6. Develop partnerships and collaborations with some
University System of Maryland campuses and/or other institutions of higher
education to support globalization efforts.
a.
Develop Linkage Agreements with selected USM campuses (i.e. SU, UMBC,
BSC, and CSU) to share experiences in international education.
b.
Develop Linkage Agreements with other U.S. institutions of higher
education to share experiences in international education.
c.
Develop Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with overseas institutions
of higher education, research centers, ministries and private sector to
provide opportunities for study, research and teaching abroad for UMES
students, faculty and staff. |
