University of Maryland Eastern Shore
International Student Advising

Overview

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore serves 250 international students from 50 different countries of the world. The countries with the highest enrollment of students include Jamaica, India, Bermuda and Ethiopia. About 54 (22%) of these students have permanent resident status. While the majority of the international students are pursuing undergraduate studies, international students make up about 19% of the graduate student population at UMES. The students are widely dispersed in the areas of their academic pursuits. Examples of the specific programs engaged in by these students include Agricultural Sciences, Hotel and Restuarant Management, Computer Sciences and MEES. The cultural diversity among the students is overwhelming. Their presence enriches cultural diversity at UMES.

The Office of International Student Advising was established in October, 1996, to:

  1. coordinate the previously fragmented services for international students at UMES,
  2. provide general counseling and advising relative to international student acclimation to the University community
  3. establish initiatives to facilitate and improve student retention.

The Office for International Students currently has the following staff:

  1. International Student Advisor
  2. Workship student
  3. Secretarial support.
