LESSEN Update 2003

View Our Programming Guide

The distance learning collaborative between Salisbury University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Wor-Wic Community College has been operating for over five years. The Lower Eastern Shore Shared Educational Network (LESSEN) has brought educational video programs to the colleges, public schools, libraries, and local businesses. LESSEN delivers these programs by microwave video connection between the colleges, and their ITFS channels (wireless cable) to the community.

Some examples of the educational programs provided by LESSEN are:

• For the institutions, LESSEN has delivered distance learning courses at Wor-Wic Community College and Salisbury University via the microwave connection and ITFS. LESSEN has also provided “live” teleconferences to the faculty and administrators for the colleges.

• For the public schools in Somerset County, Wicomico County and Worcester County, LESSEN has broadcast distance learning courses from Salisbury University in business, literature from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and business and hotel, motel, restaurant management from Wor-Wic Community College. Other programs delivered to the schools have been “live” teleconferences from the U. S. Department of Education, and instructional programs from multiple educational distributors throughout the nation. This spring LESSEN will provide K-12 educational videos from Maryland Pubic Television and educational in-service and teacher training programs from the Annenberg/CPB channel. LESSEN also broadcast the NASA educational channel and foreign language programs to the schools.

• For the past two years LESSEN has developed a relationship between the institutions and local businesses. The series “Management on the Air” I and II produced by Wor-Wic Community College has delivered management lectures to fifteen companies on the eastern shore using the ITFS video delivery system.

• For the Fall 2002, LESSEN as been involved with providing a broadcast link between the students of Salisbury University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The SU/UMES student channel has provided collaborative student productions for each campus. The spring 2003 semester looks to expanding to Wor-Wic Community College and producing additional student programs.
