Students that participate in the program are selected based on academic achievement, interest in careers in marine science or areas that prepare them for careers within NOAA Fisheries, effective problem-solving capability, and the ability to communicate effectively and work with others.

The academic development of students is strongly supported by the Center.  Students are also engaged in research projects with mentors.  Students are encouraged to review scientific literature, conduct research independently, and report the results of that research in scientific meetings at the University, and at professional meetings.  Students in this program are effectively prepared for careers with organizations such as the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Student Support

Scholarships - merit based awards provided to students who show a strong interest in pursuing careers in fields that are related to the interests of NOAA Fisheries (such as Marine Science, Biology, Chemistry, Math and Computer Science, and Sociology).

Stipends - are awards provided to students that work with faculty and graduate student mentors on projects that introduce them to the range of work and activities related to the Center.  Students also attend a weekly informal seminar to learn more about NOAA Fisheries and participate in discussions regarding school and research.

Summer Internships - students work in a variety of laboratories or field stations for eight to ten weeks during the summer.  UMES students have interned at Sandy Hook Marine Lab (New Jersey), University of Maryland Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB), the Baltimore Aquarium, NOAA Headquarters (Silver Spring, MD) and at UMES.
