The Marine Ecology and Paleontology (MEP) Lab at UMES is involved with basic and applied research in the areas of ecology of phytoplankton, seaweeds, and seagrasses of the coastal bays of the Delmarva Peninsula; nutritional and biomedical properties of edible seaweeds; remote sensing of the terrestrial and aquatic environments; and Late Cretaceous paleontology of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of eastern US.

May 08, 2007: Dr. Mitra is serving as the Vice President for Association for Women Geoscientists (Potomac Chapter).

May 08, 2007: The interdisciplinary USDA funded project, Nutritional Surveys of Uncultivated Sea Vegetables" led by Dr. Mitra in Natural Sciences, with Dr. Jurgen Schwarz as the co-investigator from Food Science and Technology Program " has gained recognition at both national and international levels (articles focusing the project was published in Daily Times, Business Day, South Africa, and GAIN in Australia).

June 12-15, 2005: American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference Presented by Drs. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri and Madhumi Mitra, entiled Initiating Environmentally Conscious Precision Agiculture at UMES.

July 1, 2005: MARS (Math and Related Sciences) Camp Presentation by Matilda Madden entitled Nutrient Loading and the Effects on the Chesapeake Bay.

July 12, 2005: ACTION Workshop presented by Leno Davis and Matilda Madden entitled Technology in the Marine Sciences.

July 16-23, 2005: XVII International Botanical Congress in Vienna, Austria. Poster presentation by Dr. Madhumi Mitra entitled Seasonal Variations in Ash, Moisture, and Lipid Content of Edible Seaweeds from the Chincoteague Bay.
