Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Physical Plant is to maintain the physical facilities of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the best possible condition; plan for and provide new and updated facilities to enhance the growth potential of all other departments, and ensure the efficient utilization of assigned space. The daily operations of the Physical Plant have a profound effect on students, faculty and staff, and impacts upon the productivity of every other department on campus. Since 1987 the Physical Plant has experienced unprecedented change and development, both in the quality and quantity of personnel and work output. These changes have led to more affective and efficient operation of existing facilities, and have savings for the institution.
Goals The primary goal of the Department of Physical Plant is to plan, construct and maintain all facilities so as to enhance the beauty of the campus and provide better living conditions for our students. Specifically: GENERAL · To attain and maintain an overall quality standard in all facilities on the campus that is regarded as “excellent” by University administration, faculty, staff, students and visitors. · To ensure the provision of well-designed, high quality and environmentally sound space for the various instructional, administrative and service units in sufficient quantity to support the mission of the University. · To provide strategic recommendation for the planning and construction of physical facilities that will enhance the quality of instruction and the overall campus environment. STAFF DEVELOPMENT · To provide continued job skills training to all employees in the areas of housekeeping, grounds and general maintenance. · To encourage employees to better themselves through continued education. · Continued education · Cross-training · Certification programs, etc. · Awards and recognition Financial Control · To maintain effective budget controls on departmental operations (including payroll, supplies and employee benefits). · To install an integrated control system that will cut operational costs. · To institute an effective fire detection and patrol tour management so as to reduce insurance premiums while at the same time affording better protection for the buildings, its contents and the occupants. · To progressively install systems that aimed at saving costs without undue hardship to employees or quality programs.
The UMES Physical Plant see itself as a diversified service organization of experienced facility professionals, dedicated to meeting the needs of the students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus and serving the needs of the community and the citizens of the state of Maryland.
