Minutes of February 11, 2003 Meeting

 

  1.  WELCOME BY THE CHAIR

The meeting began at 11:05 a.m.  The Chair, Dr. Leon Coursey, greeted the senators and welcomed everyone to the meeting.

 

  1. MINUTES OF DECEMBER, 2002

The minutes of December, 2002 were amended to indicate that student athletes graduate at a higher rate than other UMES students.  Thereafter, the minutes were approved unanimously.

 

  1. INTRODUCTION OF DR. ANNA VAUGHN-COOKE, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Chair, Dr. Leon Coursey, formally introduced the new Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Anna Vaughn-Cooke, to Senate.  In her remark, Dr. Vaughn-Cooke promised to work with faculty, staff and students to realize the mission of the University.

 

  1. COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

a)                  Academic Affairs

The Chair, Ms. Demanche, informed Senate that the proposed Criminal Justice program on Terrorism and Aviation Security thoroughly reviewed and adequately addressed all the issues raised previously by her committee.  She also reported that the submission by the department of Hotel and Restaurant Management entailed merely changes in course numbers and clerical errors.  As a result, Senate approved the two programs.

 

b)                  Diversity

The Chair, Ms. Harting, informed Senate that the committee, created in October 2002, needed three additional members.  Hence, she invited those interested in joining the committee to contact her.  In addition, she announced that the first meeting of the committee would take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2003.

 

c)                  Retention

The Director of Retention, Dr. Sims-Tucker, informed Senate that in 1999 the Board of Regents mandated all Colleges and Universities in the System to develop appropriate advising plans.  Such plans were to be modeled on the given format and specified criteria.  Furthermore, she reported that one of the  required components was the evaluation of both individual advisors as well as the institutional advising process.  Finally, she informed Senate that it was the objective of the Retention Committee to begin the evaluation of individual advisors during this spring semester.

 

d)                  Athletics

The Chair of Senate, Dr. Leon Coursey, used the opportunity of the presentation of the report of the Athletics committee to formally introduce to all present the new Athletics Director, Mr. Nelson Townsend,  In his remark, the Athletics Director invited the entire UMES community to utilize the excellent facilities of his department.  He also urged the faculty to hold scholar athletes accountable academically.

 

e)                  Library

The Chair, Dr. Maryam Rahimi, urged all library patrons to list the issues they would like the library staff to address and to deposit such lists in the library suggestion box.

 

f)                    CUSF

The Representative, Dr. Noonan, reported that the State Governor would attend the next CUSF meeting.  She, therefore, invited all those who would like to bring any issue to the attention of the Governor to contact her as soon as possible.

 

In addition, she informed Senate of the proposal to hand over all UMES accreditation matters to the Professional Education Unit.  Thereafter, Senate approved the proposal.

 

New Business

 

i.                     INTRODUCTION OF DR. LADD COLSTON, ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR COMMERCIALIZATION AND OUTREACH

The Chair of Senate, Dr. Leon Coursey, formally introduced the new Associate Vice President for Commercialization and Outreach, Dr. Ladd Colston, to Senate.  In his remark, Dr. Colston announced that the Tom Joyner Foundation had selected UMES as the HBCU of the month for April, 2003.

 

ii.                   INTRODUCTION OF DR. EMMANUEL ACQUAH, ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Chair of Senate, Dr. Leon Coursey, formally introduced the new Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Emmanuel Acquah, to Senate.  In his remark, Dr. Acquah promised to help internationalize UMES academic programs in keeping with the proposed System’s focus on International Education.

 

iii.                  INTRODUCTION OF DR. ANDREW CARRINGTON, ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

The Chair of Senate, Dr. Leon Coursey, formally introduced the new Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Andrew Carrington, to Senate.  In his own remark, Dr. Carrington pledged to work for the successful outcome of all the programs seeking accreditation.

 

 

 

 

THE PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

The Chair of Senate, Dr. Leon Coursey, was very delighted that the President, Dr. Thelma Thompson, was in attendance.  Consequently, he called on her to address Senate.  In her address, the President expressed her gratitude to the UMES faculty and staff for delivering the vision of the University.  Hence, she pledged to continue to encourage the culture of shared governance of the institution.  Finally, she announced to the acclamation of Senate that as a result of an anonymous donation, members of the UMES family could purchase tickets for the March 1, 2003 gala event for only half the advertised price.
