University Of Maryland Eastern Shore Faculty Senate

Minutes of the meeting held on September 9, 2003

A.        The meeting was called to order by outgoing Chair Dr. Leon Coursey at 11:00 a.m.

B.        New Officers

There was a tie for Parliamentarian between Drs. Walther and Mollett.  A vote was called for.  Dr. Mollett wished to retract his nomination.  He later retracted his retraction.  A question arose as to whether all senators could vote since the vote should have taken place at the last faculty senate meeting.  It was decided that all senators could vote.  A vote was taken and Dr. Theodore Mollett was elected.

The officers for the 2003-2004 academic year include:

C.        Opening Remarks

Dr. Eydgahi thanked the outgoing officers for their work during 2002-3003.  He stated the UMES Senate and Faculty Assembly is the means by which we exercise involvement in shaping the UMES community.  He encouraged people to attend both meetings and to bring agenda items.  We must tell him what we want, what we need done, and/or what problems we have so that they can be debated and brought to the administrations attention.

D.        Appeal to Chair of the Faculty Assembly

An appeal was made to the Chair of the Faculty Assembly to have the names of all faculty senators sent to him.  Dr. Gupta requested assistance getting the names of the faculty senators.  There are currently only five or 6 faculty senators.  Only 4 or 5 departments have submitted their senators for the 2003-2004 year.  It is crucial that a quorum is present when votes occur.  We do not have senators from each department.
