Comments and Concerns:
It was noted that the course changes requested by the Business and Economics department were needed to assist them as they continue to pursue accreditation.
Dr. Yilmaz expressed concern that his committee’s concerns were not forwarded to the Academic Affairs committee. Additionally, he noted that it was not appropriate to prescribe specific content in a course described as “Independent Study.”
Dr. Coursey stated that Dr. Yilmaz’s concerns would be passed on to Dr. Nnadi.
Mr. Bingham stated that the Ph.D. program from Human Ecology was not attached to the memo from the Graduate Council Dean.
Approvals:
The Faculty Senate approved 2 new programs: 1) The Master’s degree Program in Rehabilitation Counseling and 2) the Bachelor’s degree program in African American Studies, along with the minor in African American Studies.
The Senate Faculty Committee approved all African American Studies courses.
The Senate Faculty Committee approved all course/catalogue changes
Discussion:
The Academic Affairs Committee received a very large number of requests for approvals, many coming in at the last minute, creating a very large workload on this committee in a very short period of time. The Faculty Senate discussed the need to clarify and enforce the appropriate approval process in the future.
Dr. Wagonheim suggested that a Resource Manual be developed which indicated proper processes, procedures, and timelines for program and course changes/approvals. Dr. Rahimi suggested that a signature sheet with date in/date out tracking be attached to program approvals to help determine where approvals are getting held up. It appears that program approvals are languishing for months in the approval process.
A number of documents submitted in support of the program/course approvals were incorrect, incomplete, or absent. A motion was made by Dr. Yilmaz, seconded by Ms. Demanche, that applications for approval be immediately sent back until all forms and supporting documentation were completed. The motion was approved by the Faculty Senate.
Dr. Coursey formally recognized and thanked the Academic Affairs Committee for all of their hard work. The committee was given a round of applause by the Faculty Senate.
