MAJOR
PROGRAMS
Several programs have become traditional at UMES and
are looked forward to by students, staff, alumni, and the local community.
Among these programs are the annual SpringFest Open House, Black History
Month Convocation, First Look Fair, Student Leadership Retreat, National
Women's History Month Activities, Homecoming, Coronation, and Family Weekend.

SpringFest/Open
House
Student Activities, working in conjunction with the Offices of Residence
Life, Admissions, and Recruitment plans this annual week long event that
occurs during the month of April. Prospective students, UMES students,
guests, and alumni are treated to an assortment of games, novelties,
vendors, music, and food. More than 1500 high school students visit the
campus during the Open House/Spring Fest events, they meet with academic
departments, and tour the campus. Four days of wild and crazy indoor/outdoor
games start the week, followed by the Open House/Spring Fest events and
a bus trip to Kings Dominion.

Black History
Month Assembly
During the month of February, the Office of Student Activities sponsors
the annual Black History Month Assembly. Speakers are brought to the campus
to share their knowledge of African-American History, way of like, and
current events and trends. Other activities highlighting culture and the
arts are sponsored throughout the year. |

First Look Fair
The First Look Fair is an annual event that takes place during the month
of September. It is designed to give students, faculty, staff, and alumni a chance
to look at student organizations. Student organizations set up displays
in the student center, sharing information about their organization with the
university community. Students are provided an opportunity to learn and to gather
information on how to become a member of campus organizations. |
Student
Leadership Retreat
The leadership retreat occurs twice a year, during the fall and spring
semesters. Students are engaged in workshops, seminars, service programs,
and challenging outdoor experiences. Activities are designed to develop,
and enhance leadership potential. |

National
Women's History Month Activities
This is a national month-long celebration in honor of, and dedicated to
women. Programs, seminars, speakers, and workshops are offered throughout
the month of March. |
Homecoming
Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are treated to some exciting basketball
by the UMES men and women's basketball teams. Alumni return to campus to
remember days past and to interact with matriculating students. |
Coronation
A regal affair scheduled during the month of October, Mr. and Miss University
of Maryland Eastern Shore are crowned Campus King and Queen. All campus
organizations are encouraged to participate in an evening of elegance
and pageantry. |
