    Environmentally Conscious Precision Agriculture: A Platform form Active Learning and Community Engagement


    NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: Although opportunities for college graduates as practitioners and researchers in the field of food and agricultural sciences are on the rise, enrollment in Colleges of Agriculture, nationally, are on the decline. It is imperative to reverse this trend by innovative means that will attract non-traditional students who are exposed to and integrated in the field of agriculture. It is also necessary to promote agriculture as a modern high technology scientific/engineering field.

    This project will address these relevant issues by: 1) developing and delivering a multidisciplinary team-taught course in Environmentally Conscious Precision Agriculture (ECPA); 2) continuing to develop infrastructure through acquisition of scientific instrumentation and systems as well as providing active learning and research opportunities through experiential learning projects and summer internships at USDA and UMES in the field of precision agriculture. Activities involving yield mapping, nutrient management and environmental monitoring, geospatial information technology, field scouting and remote sensing will be the focus. Efforts will also be devoted to reaching local farmers to promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices through the gradual adoption of site-specific farming practices as well as integrating outreach to K-12 institutions to promote the appropriate image of agriculture.
