 The Georgia Small Ruminant

Research and Extension Center

Fort Valley State University's (GA) Small Ruminant Research and Extension Center is the largest facility of its kind east of the Mississippi River and is recognized as a national leader in goat research. Since 1986, this center's scientists have studied reproductive performance, embryo transfer technology, forage utilization, nutritive efficiency, lactation physiology, and milk and meat quality in goats.  Currently the work there includes improving reproductive efficiency of goats through embryo transfer technology, developing economically viable nutritional strategies for small ruminant production, biological control of internal parasites in small ruminants, developing value-added goat milk and meat products, improving meat quality in goats using pre- and post-harvest methodologies, and food safety.
