Department Vision

The Department of Business, Management and Accounting (DBMA) is committed to becoming a national model for producing globally competent citizenry in the 21st century, emphasizing multicultural diversity and international perspectives within an environment that nurtures a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. DBMA will provide opportunities for diverse, motivated and promising students to receive a high quality management education via the creation of a culture and systematic approach to successfully close the achievement gap. We prepare learners to meet the challenges of an ever-changing, global knowledge-based economy through continuous improvement in program quality.

Department Mission

The mission of the Department of Business, Management and Accounting (DBMA) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) builds upon the University's unique responsibilities as a land grant institution, with a purpose and uniqueness grounded in distinctive learning, discovery and engagement of its students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders. DBMA is committed to provide access to high quality, value-based undergraduate management educational experiences with an emphasis on multicultural diversity and international perspectives. DBMA is focused on meeting the economic development needs of the Eastern Shore, the State of Maryland, the nation and the world. Our students acquire competencies in business, management and accounting with an ethical foundation for professional and personal success in the twenty-first century. This mission is anchored by the ongoing intellectual contributions of faculty, instructional innovations and outreach with a network of informed constituencies.

Departmental Objectives

he objectives of the programs offered in the Department of Business, Management and Accounting are as follows:

                   of provisional admits who may require additional individualized support systems.
                » To collaborate with the public school systems and other organizations in fostering
                   an appreciation of the management process and the free enterprise system.

General Information

Professional Development

Professional development is an integral part of preparing to establish viable management/accounting careers in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. During their sophomore and junior years students majoring in the Department must enroll in the 0.5 credit professional development course. In addition, participation in departmentally sponsored activities and student Organizations are required. Appropriate business attire is required for various functions. During the first semester of the freshman year all students must acquire appropriate business attire. Details will be provided.

Student Organization

Departmentally sponsored Student Organizations are: UMES Student Chapter of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA); Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE); National Student Business League (NSBL); Student Advisory Board (SAB); the Sports Marketing and Entrepreneurship Club (SMEC), the Student Chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), and Phi Beta Lambda.

Communication Skills

Written and oral communication skills are extremely important. Standard English is required for all formal settings and submissions such as classroom interactions, presentations, written assignments, etc. All students must pass a business communications proficiency test as a requirement in BUED 333 (Business Communications). Should students not pass the proficiency test, an incomplete will be received for the course, providing that all other requirements for the course have been met. Students failing the proficiency testwillhave up to one year to pass the test, thereby removing the incomplete. If the incomplete is not removed within one year, the course must be repeated.

Practical Experience

All students majoring in business administration and accounting are encouraged to acquire meaningful, practical experience in a business, government, or non-profit organization. This requirement can be met in a variety of ways, such as approved work experience, voluntary services, on-campus externship, and/or faculty directed consulting/research projects. No credit is earned for this experience. However, students desiring credit for an approved internship must submit for approval, a job description and subsequently a performance appraisal letter from their supervisor. Following approval by the department chairperson and enrollment in BUAD 480, the student will write a reflective paper approximately 25 pages in length. The reflective paper should integrate classroom knowledge with practical experiences acquired during the internship. Keeping a daily log of internship activities/tasks is recommended.

Pre-Teaching Internship Requirements

Students requesting permission to transfer accounting and computer application courses into the Business Education program must first demonstrate their proficiency in these two areas prior to receiving transfer credits for the courses. In addition, all Business Education majors must demonstrate their ability to teach designated computer applications and elementary bookkeeping/accounting in the methods course, EDCI 427B (Curriculum and Instruction in Business Education).

Center for Management Assistance and Research (C-MAR)

Through the Center for Management Assistance and Research (C-MAR), the departmental faculty and students provide technical assistance to small and micro enterprises. Particular attention is given to the needs of minority/disadvantaged small and micro business owners as well as business development in developing regions of the world such as Southern Africa. Self-reliance is stressed by encouraging and supporting the entrepreneurial spirit. In addition emphasis is placed on applied management research relative to business, government, and non-profit organizations. The C-MAR also facilitates the Business, Management and Accounting Department's goal of integrating real-world experiences into the curricula via internships, consulting projects, and research projects.

Honor Society

Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a baccalaureate or post-baccaaureate (master's) program at a school accredited by the AACSB International. To be eligible for membership, the academic ranking of those being considered must place them:

- in the upper 10 percent of junior or senior class (or equivalent); or
- upper 20 percent of the graduation master's class; or
- completed all doctoral requirements.

Program Description

he programs offered in the Department of Business, Management and Accounting are grounded in the liberal arts. More than 50 percent of the curricula comprise general education and other liberal arts courses necessary for the development of each student's cognitive skills. These programs prepare students for professional careers in accounting and managerial positions. Accounting students are encouraged to meet the 150 credit-hour and residency requirements to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountants’ Examination in their respective states. The Department plans to offer a Masters of Accountancy Degree Program to meet the legislated needs of accounting students.

The Department is committed to program enhancement and is currently pursuing Accreditation under the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - International (AACSB). The Accreditation Plan for the Department has been approved to allow the Department of Business, Management, and Accounting to continue to hold membership in the AACSB – International.

The Business Education major is the only accredited program of its kind in the State of Maryland. The program is designed to develop competencies among students to teach office administration, accounting, computer concepts and applications, and other business-related courses in secondary education.

Student Learning

elcome to the Department of Business, Management, and Accounting. As a department we emphasize broad academic preparation that is purposed to enhance and nurture the intellectual, professional, academic, interpersonal and social development of students. The well rounded and carefully crafted curriculum offered covers such topic areas as general business, strategic management, quantitative concepts and skills, business ethics, accounting, finance, marketing, communications, computer concepts and applications, professional development, economics, finance and security analysis, business law, and operations research and decision theory. Students are also required to take general education courses and additional business courses in their specific majors. Our curriculum has is purposed to satisfy a series of student learning outcomes.

                » Learning Goal VI: Graduates should have knowledge breadth and depth
                   in the business core functional areas.
                » Learning Goal VII: Graduates should have comprehensive knowledge, skills,
                   and professional orientation required for productive management careers in all
                   segments of society and for graduate study in management and related disciplines.

The Department of Business, Management, and Accounting is committed to continuous improvement through and is constantly evaluating, reflecting upon, and improving its programs in order to improve the overall teaching and learning experience. Continuous Improvement Cycle


he UMES Department of Business, Management, and Accounting is fully accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Business Education program is the only fully NCATE accredited program of its kind in the Maryland State System. Committed to continual program enhancement, as well as with the goal of becoming a Department of distinction, the UMES Department of Business, Management, and Accounting is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB).

The AACSB Accreditation Plan for the UMES Department of Business, Management, and Accounting has been approved to allow the Department to continue to hold membership in the AACSB International. In 2008, the Department submitted its third annual report for review and is anticipating visitation and review in 2009.

AACSB accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools, worldwide. It is known as the hallmark of excellence. Institutions receiving accreditation join an elite group that has undergone an extensive and rigorous review process.

General Restrictions

1. Junior and senior level course requirements for a degree in Business Administration, Accounting,
    and Business Education cannot be satisfied through credit by examination, independent study,
    or other nontraditional methods.

2. At least 50 percent of the business credit hours required for the Business Administration
     and Accounting degrees must be earned at UMES.

3. There is no business concentration in the General Studies Program.

4. Repeat courses should be taken at UMES.

5. Credit hours in business courses taken by majors outside of the Department of Business,
     Management, and Accounting can not exceed 25 percent of the program requirements
     (such as a 120 hour program can not consist of more than 30 credit hours in business courses).

Academic Performance

All students must earn a grade of “C” or better in ENGL 101, ENGL 102, MATH 109, and all foundation knowledge and major course requirements.
