    About the Hazel Endowment

    Established by Eastern Shore philanthropist, Richard F. Hazel, the Hazel Endowment provides full tuition undergraduate and graduate scholarships to students majoring in education from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and Sussex County, Delaware. The $3 million gift is the largest ever donation by an individual to a historically black college or university. It also provides for an endowed professorship and professional development for education faculty in the UMES Department of Education.

     

    About Richard F. Hazel

    The former president of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Richard F. Hazel, dedicated his life to the betterment of the Eastern Shore by providing ongoing employment for hundreds of its residents and by touching the lives of thousands with his numerous charitable donations. His unassuming manner further demonstrates the sincerity of his generosity.

     

    Criteria for Application

    Hazel scholars are chosen from undergraduate and graduate students in education who meet established academic criteria. The annual, full tuition scholarships will be awarded with a priority to students from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and Sussex County, Delaware. Selection is based on admission to the respective program, grade point average, an academic or professional recommendation, financial need and dispositions, as measured by the production of a short essay and interview.
