It is the responsibility of this office to ensure the proper use of these program funds in order to benefit the maximum number of students. Awards can only be offered to those students that are registered in degree seeking programs of study.

Below is a step-by-step tool that will guide you through the financial aid process beginning with your application for admission to UMES and concluding with the payment of your bill.  The links are helpful to both prospective and incoming freshmen. Be sure to visit the rest of our Web site for more information that may meet your specific needs.

    Getting Started

Once you select the award year you are adjusting, your award will show and you will have the option to either accept (in full or reduced amount) or decline the Federal Direct Student Loan(s).
    •  Direct Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) are also listed on your award notification letter and your award screen if you are a dependent student (as determined by the FAFSA and U.S. Department of Education). These loans are shown as offered only and list the maximum amount that a parent can borrow for the upcoming academic year. THIS LOAN IS NOT GUARANTEED. The parent must apply online at  www.studentloans.gov. Their credit must be approved by the Department of Education to receive the PLUS loan.

    • Meet with your advisor and pre-register for classes and complete your payment confirmation to make your registration official.
    • Pay your bill prior to the due date to avoid late fees and to prevent problems in registering for the following semester.

    Parents

    Information For Parents

Welcome parents of prospective, new and current UMES students!  We strongly encourage our students to be proactively involved in the financial aid process that affects them; however, we understand that parents sometimes require specific information about their students' financial aid in order to assist them with college expenses. To this end, the following will assist parents in making the financial aid process a little easier.

    Accessing Student Records

In an effort to provide greater security for our students of their personal information, the Financial Aid office will provide specific student information ONLY if the student's UMES ID number is presented. This policy applies to students or parents who come into the Financial Aid office on campus as well as those who contact the office via telephone, email, mail, or fax. Parents, who need information about their student's financial aid package, will be given this information if an  Authorization to Release Information  form is on file.  It is the student's responsibility to submit this form, listing the names of anyone authorized to receive the student's financial information. Once that release is received by our office, parents can call our office to receive information and representatives will be happy to assist. Parents who prefer to use e-mail must contact us through the email account listed on the release form.

    Estimating Out-of-pocket Expenses

Parents can estimate their students' out-of-pocket expenses by comparing the financial aid award package to estimated tuition, fee, room and board charges which can be found under  Cost of Attendance on our Office of Student Financial Aid homepage.
