Assessment of Student Learning

  • Assessment of Student Learning at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)

Students In PC LabUMES recognizes the key role played by an effective assessment process for student learning in its mission of providing high quality education.  To this end, it strives to build and maintain a sound assessment process at course, program, and institutional levels with clearly defined student learning outcomes and uses multiple assessment approaches to ensure that students muster critical knowledge and skills in General Education and discipline areas.  Since no single tool is perfect for assessing student learning, direct and indirect assessment approaches including performance assessments are used to document what students know, think, and can do at the conclusion of their programs.  More importantly, the results of assessments are used for continuous improvement of student learning. To guide assessments, UMES uses the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Process (SLOAP) for students to demonstrate their levels of achievement of critical learning outcomes in General Education and discipline areas as determined by each program.
