UMES Jazz Ensemble

  • The UMES Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Brian C. Dean has distinguished itself by performing with world-renown guest artists and tours to exotic destinations.  The UMES Jazz Ensemble has performed with countless legendary musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Dr. Donald Byrd, Wycliffe Gordon, Alex Norris, Dr. Trineice Robinson-Martin, Benny Golson, Larry Ridley, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Stanley Turrentine, Bilal, and Gabrielle Goodman.  Notable Alumni of the University include Clifford Brown and Duane Eubanks.

    This ensemble performs regularly for the Blues Alley Big Band Jam in Washington D.C., the Morgan/Bowie/UMES Big Band Bash, and was featured at the National HBCU Conference held in Washington, D.C. in 2007. The band performed during the Inaugural Ball in 2008 for previous Maryland governor Martin O'Malley in Baltimore, MD. The band has toured to Ghana, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Chicago, Florida, Washington D.C., Baltimore and New York.  The UMES Jazz Ensemble, with the UMES Concert Choir and UMES Wind Ensemble recorded an album titled, “Celebrating Music at UMES.”  To purchase the CD contact the UMES music department.
