    USAirways magazine - Aug. 2013

The August 2013 edition of US Airways magazine features an article about UMES.

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - (Aug. 1, 2013) - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is telling its story this month to potentially 6.5 million captive readers, thanks to US Airways magazine.

A two-page spread about UMES in the August 2013 edition puts the university in the company of 29 other historically black institutions featured in the monthly in-flight magazine available to air travelers on five continents.

The magazine partnered with the National HBCU Alumni Associations to present the special section that also includes articles about Bowie and Morgan as well as Talladega College, the undergraduate alma mater of UMES President Juliette B. Bell.

Dr. Bell says she wants to elevate UMES's visibility not only regionally but nationally by reaching out to a broader audience and telling its story. Exposure in an in-flight magazine produced by one of the world's largest air carriers fits that vision.

Dr. Bell recently did an interview with Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine, which is expected to publish an article about the growing number of women who are leading the nation's HBCUs.

Earlier this year, UMES produced a 5-minute 46-second promotional video that debuted during Bell's inauguration week and is receiving wide praise for capturing its theme - " Hawk-4-Life ."

The US Airways magazine article on pages 80 and 81 focuses on three of UMES' academic programs - hotel restaurant management, engineering - aviation science and the newly retooled graduate program in physician assistant studies. A classroom scene from each of those disciplines accompanies the article, along with an image of the iconic footbridge and Student Services Center.
