New and Beginning Farmer Interest Meetings

  • Thursday, June 24, 2010

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Do you have a desire to farm, but don't know where to start?  Regardless of your age, gender, race, education or nationality, Farm Management Specialist Erroll Mattox wants to talk to you during one of two interest meetings slated for Wednesday, July 21, and Tuesday, August 10, at the Wicomico Extension Office at 7 p.m.

The UMES Small Farm Outreach Initiative at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will hold new and beginning farmer interest meetings in order to gauge the number of people interested in pursuing farming as a business.  With enough interest, a formal two-year program will be developed.

The Outreach Initiative at UMES provides education, program activities and training for small-scale farmers.  Its education and outreach programs answer a variety of issues and needs, to include alternative enterprise selection, direct marketing strategies, improved agriculture production systems, farm business management, better management of natural resources, and minimum participation in USDA farm programs.

For more information about this and other programs that support novices who are interested in farming, contact Erroll Mattox at 410-651-6206 or by email at eamattox@umes.edu
