UMES Winter Commencement Launches Some 239 Graduates

    Hayward, Dr. IsaacPRINCESS ANNE, MD - The 12th Winter Commencement at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore takes place on Friday, December 19, at 10 a.m. in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.  Approximately 239 degrees are to be conferred, launching UMES graduates into the workforce and graduate schools.   

    Music by the UMES Concert Choir and the UMES Wind Ensemble precede the commencement address by Dr. Isaac J. Hayward, one of UMES many successful alumni.  Hayward is the founder and president of Hayward Histopathology, PC, a toxicologic pathology consulting business.  He is a board certified veterinary pathologist, an accomplishment held by an elite group.  UMES President Thelma B. Thompson is slated to present him with a presidential medal.

    Throughout his career, Hayward held leadership positions as a career military pathologist and staff pathologist in the pharmaceutical industry.  Prior to starting his own business, he established the international pathology peer review program at Amgen Inc., the largest biopharmaceutical company in the world.

    A native of Princess Anne, Hayward earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural education from UMES in 1972 and a Master's of Education in the same field a year later from Pennsylvania State University.    After earning a second Bachelor of Science in animal and poultry sciences from Tuskegee University, he earned the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the same.

    Hayward is licensed to practice veterinary medicine and surgery in the states of Alabama, California, Georgia and Maryland.  He currently resides in Conyers, Ga.       

    Jones, JodiDuring the commencement exercises, an honorary degree will be presented to Jodi Jones, president, CEO and executive chef of Vitality Gourmet and founder of the Wellness Alliance Network Inc.  She is a certified nutritionist and co-author of The Vitality Connection, Ten Practical Ways to Optimize Your Health and Reverse the Aging Process with Dr. Michael Grossman.  She is under contract with Doctors LifeRight for Kids and is the author of their Healthy Cookbook.

    Jones is a motivational public speaker in the areas of wellness, nutritional cooking and living your passion.  She has been interviewed nationally on radio and cable TV shows and featured in publications such as Women's World, Today's Women and Brentwood Magazine.

    Guests for the commencement exercises are encouraged to be seated one half-hour prior to the start of the event in order to observe the student and faulty processional.  No tickets are necessary.  For more information, visit www.umes.edu/commencement
