Juliette B. BellPRINCESS ANNE - (June 29, 2012) - Juliette B. Bell, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's new president, officially assumes office (Sunday) July1.

Bell, previously provost and chief academic officer at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, is the institution's 15th leader and the fourth woman to hold the post.

She takes over from Mortimer Neufville, a former UMES administrator who came out of retirement to serve as the institution's interim president when Thelma B. Thompson stepped down in mid-August 2011.

Bell, 57, a biochemist who before becoming a college educator did DNA-genetic research, emerged this past spring as the top candidate for the vacancy following a nationwide search by the University System of Maryland.

Also joining Bell as newcomers to campus this summer is another "first-year" class of graduate students in pharmacy, a three-year doctoral program that launched in 2010 and is now fully enrolled. An estimated 900 new undergraduates are expected to enroll when the fall semester begins Aug. 27.
