Paid Internship Program in the Marine and Estuarine Sciences

With the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns will conduct original research projects in one of a wide range of marine science topics. In addition to laboratory and field research activities, students will participate in field trips to the Maryland Coastal Bays, Virginia Institute of Marine Science Eastern Shore Laboratory, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Laboratory, and Pocomoke State Park; they will receive instruction in topics such as scientific ethics, library resources for research, experimental design and data analysis, and scientific writing and communication. Students will present their research to their peers and mentors at a symposium at the Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center on the final day of the internship. 

Who: Students interested in careers in Marine Science; preference will be given to rising sophomores and rising juniors, but all college students are welcome to apply; number of positions will depend on current funding availability.

When: May 31 - August 6, 2016; Students must attend all ten weeks of the program to receive the stipend.

Stipend: $5,000 + housing + meals

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is situated in Princess Anne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, near both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, making it an excellent location for research in marine and estuarine science. The University supports well-funded undergraduate and graduate programs in marine and agricultural science and maintains state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, equipment, and research boats. The Paul S. Sarbanes Coastal Ecology Center, located at Assateague Island, MD is used to conduct field and laboratory studies in Maryland's Coastal Bays. UMES Logo
