1890 Program Administration

  • The 1890 Extension Program's operating budget for FY 2000 figures include $1,417,593 in direct support and roughly $600,000 indirect support from the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). Sixty percent (60%) of the direct support are federal funds and forty percent (40%) are state and county funds. Indirect support totals more than $600,000. These funds are administered by the 1890 Extension Administrator and accounted for by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Business Office at UMCP.

There are thirty-six (36) persons with 1890 Extension appointments throughout Maryland. This number includes specialists, agents, program assistants and secretaries. Sixteen are based on campus.

Since 1988, the Extension Administrator has had a 40% appointment with the University of Maryland College Park Agricultural Experiment Station. For eight years he served as Director of the Lower Eastern Shore Research and Education Center in Salisbury. Most recently, the responsibilities have changed to Coordinator of Collaborative Agricultural Research between UMES and UMCP. An office is maintained at the Salisbury Research Facility.

Maryland Cooperative Extension is a real example of a seamless organization. All 1890 and 1862 personnel follow the same policies and procedures including employment, evaluation, promotion and tenure, and salary adjustments. Three 1890 county agents serve as county directors (Somerset, Dorchester and Talbot).
