Becoming an LSAMP Scholar

  • The LSAMP program, funded by the National Science Foundation, is designed to increase the quality and quantity of underrepresented minority students who successfully complete baccalaureate and advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  

    Eligibility

    To be considered for participation as an LSAMP Scholar applicants must satisfy the following criteria:

    • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
    • Be enrolled at UMES as a full-time student majoring in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) discipline

    • Be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher*
    • Have completed at least two semesters of college at the time of application
    • Transfer students from Community Colleges are especially encouraged to apply.

    *Students who do not meet the 3.0 GPA requirements, but have a minimum 2.5 GPA are still considered for participation as LSAMP Affiliates.  

    Roles and Responsibilities

    LSAMP Scholars are required to:

    • Maintain full-time enrollment in an eligible STEM program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Commit to and conduct research with a STEM faculty member

    • Provide regular reports and updates (written and oral) regarding research participation
    • Participate in all LSAMP activities and workshops
    • Present research at the UMES Annual Graduate Research Symposium
    • Attend monthly meetings
    • Participate in community outreach activities
    • Submit other documentation upon request

    LSAMP Affiliates:

    • Must maintain cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
    • Are not required to conduct faculty mentored research, but it is highly encouraged.
    • Attend monthly meetings
    • Submit other documentation upon request
    For both Scholars and Affiliates, continued eligibility is based on academic performance and program participation.
