    Exercise Science

    The Physical Education program leads to a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Exercise Science. The flexibility of the curriculum provides the students an opportunity to select courses that will meet the pre requisites for the Physical Therapy program. The purpose of this program is to develop competent exercise scientist who will provide effective professional services while developing innovative procedures for dealing with problems emanating from health-related aspects of physical activities and sport performance.

    The goal of the department of Physical Education is to prepare students to pursue specific career paths as exercise scientist in allied health fields, pre-professional school, educational institutions, private sector (as consultants, researchers), coaches, athletic trainers, agency and Corporate Fitness and Clinical Rehabilitation. Graduates of this program will be prepared to pursue graduate studies in areas of biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor learning or Physical Therapy programs.

    The mission of the undergraduate program in rehabilitation services is to prepare students for entry-level employment in a variety of human services and rehabilitation-related settings, especially those serving physically, emotionally and developmentally disabled individuals. The program is also designed to prepare its graduates to enter masters level programs in rehabilitation, physical therapy, related allied health fields, and human services.

    The goal of the Department of Rehabilitation Services is to prepare highly qualified allied health care professionals for entry-level positions in a variety of public and private health care and rehabilitation settings and to prepare those students desiring to continue their education to enter graduate programs in Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and a variety of other allied health and human service programs.

    The Physician Assistant Department offers a Master of Medical Science Degree.  The Physician Assistant Program constitutes the professional preparation for students desiring to become Physician Assistants. The four-year course of study is comprised of a two-year Pre-Professional Phase and a 24-month Professional Program. Upon successful completion of prerequisite courses in the Pre-Professional Phase, students will be qualified to apply for entry into the Professional Program. Entry into the Professional Program is competitive and not guaranteed. UMES students receive Professional Program entry preference.

    Graduates of the program will be prepared to deliver primary health care services to diverse patient populations with acute to chronic medical and surgical conditions in both rural and urban communities. As a Physician Assistant, they manage patients throughout the life cycle in both community and institutionally based clinical practices. Upon graduation, Physician Assistants take a National Certification Examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners.

    The program is designed to provide rehabilitation education and training to meet the needs of a diverse and global labor market. The curriculum includes job placement counseling of people with disabilities; provides for the infusion of rehabilitation technology across the curriculum; and prepares students to work in a variety of allied health and human service professions. Learning about assistive/adaptive and other relevant technology will make a difference in counseling about quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Students will be trained for future leadership positions in the rehabilitation and the health care industry.

    The program is based on the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) guide-lines and State of Maryland professional counselor licensure criteria. Emphasis is placed on competencies that prepare graduates for a career path that includes direct service competencies and administrative functions.
