The Summer Transportation Institute provides awareness to middle school students on transportation careers and encourages them to consider transportation-related courses of study in their higher education pursuits. Specifically, the UMES Summer Transportation Institute seeks to create awareness and stimulate interest among middle school students on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland about the vast transportation and science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) related careers available and provide them with the opportunities to explore many exciting fields in the Transportation and STEM Industry through field trips and hands on activities.

The Institute’s activities cover three general programs: Academic ProgramEnhancement Program and Sports and Recreation Program. The Institute integrates in its academic programs as well as the field trips, the philosophy of sustaining our environment with respect to thoughtful and effective land use, resource conservation and species protection as they study and think critically on the projects they build. The Academic Program exposes the participants to various modes of transportation: land, air, water and aspects of transportation safety and covers various transportation careers, education and training requirements. The Enhancement Programexposes participants to methods and activities which improve study habits, critical thinking, promote academic achievement and foster self-awareness through emphasis on STEM fields and careers. Students will be exposed to daily activities and studies in English, Mathematics and Science to prepare them to sit for standard school tests, join STEM programs and activities in their schools and stress the need to consider pursuing STEM programs in college. In addition, the students will be introduced to diversity issues that address cultural diversity and to make them aware of the civil rights of others and how they can coexist harmoniously with others in the society. The purpose of the Sports and Recreation Program is to expose students to sports and recreation, rules and regulations, and to promote a healthy team and competitive attitude among the participants.

The Institute is non-residential for two weeks from June 19th to July 7th 2017. Each participant will be provided lunch for the period and a Casio FX 9860 G II Scientific Calculator. Each student must make transportation arrangement to and from UMES. However, transportation will be provided for limited participants based on need. Students who need transportation should indicate it their application. The program will run from 8 am to 5 pm daily.

The Institute’s activities are well designed and coordinated and are conducted by experienced teachers and professionals.
