{"id":1381,"date":"2021-08-09T18:16:37","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T22:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/?page_id=1381"},"modified":"2021-08-09T18:16:46","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T22:16:46","slug":"faculty-staff-referral-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/faculty-staff-referral-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty &#038; Staff Referral Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When a Student May Need Counseling:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br><strong>A Guide For Faculty &amp; Staff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some signs that indicate a student may be experiencing more stress than she\/he can handle are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Marked decline in quality of course work, class participation, quality of papers or test results.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Increased absence from class or failure to turn in work.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Chronic fatigue and low energy.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Attention and memory difficulties.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Low self-esteem and prolonged depression, suggested by a<br>sad expression, apathy, weight loss, sleep difficulties, or tearfulness.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nervousness, agitation, excessive worry, irritability and sudden outbursts of anger, threats of harming others, aggressiveness, or nonstop talking.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Abrupt or radical changes in behavior or bizarre behavior, speech, writing, or thinking.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Abnormal eating or exercise behaviors.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Alcohol and other drug abuse.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Isolation from others.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Extreme dependency on faculty, staff, or Community Leader, including spending much of his\/her spare time visiting during office hours or at other times.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Marked change in personal hygiene.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Talk of suicide, either directly or indirectly, such as \u201cI won\u2019t be around to take that exam anyway\u201d&nbsp; or \u201cI\u2019m not worried about getting a job, I won\u2019t need one.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples of issues that often prompt referral to a counselor include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Social\/personal concerns, Career choices\/selecting a major&nbsp;<br><\/li><li>Stress, Depression, General anxiety<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Identity development\/individuation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Substance abuse, Sexual assault<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Relationship concerns, Racial\/cultural adjustments<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Extreme test anxiety, Grief\/loss (including loss of&nbsp; a romantic relationship)<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a Student May Need Counseling:&nbsp;A Guide For Faculty &amp; Staff Some signs that indicate a student may be experiencing more stress than she\/he can handle are: Marked decline in quality of course work, class participation, quality of papers or test results.
