{"id":1406,"date":"2021-08-09T18:38:08","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T22:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/?page_id=1406"},"modified":"2022-12-21T11:37:47","modified_gmt":"2022-12-21T15:37:47","slug":"quick-tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/quick-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Quick Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Talk to the students in private.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask questions and listen carefully to the student\u2019s answers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Show concern and interest.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Repeat back the essence of what the student has told you.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Specifically state your reasons for concern.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Avoid criticizing or sounding judgmental.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Suggest Counseling Services as a resource and discuss this with the student.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Explain to the student that Counseling Services is CONFIDENTIAL.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If the student resists help and you are still worried, consult with Counseling Services staff.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>After the Referral is Made<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is reassuring to know that a student you have referred has actually made and kept an appointment.&nbsp; The best way to achieve this&nbsp; reassurance is to ask the student directly.&nbsp; This is also a way of showing continuing concern for the student.&nbsp; We may suggest that the student confirm this with you and, if requested, we will confirm with you that a student had attended their first session.&nbsp; Otherwise, we will need the student\u2019s permission to contact you for any other information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be times when the student will not want to share this information with you.&nbsp; In these instances, both Counseling Services and you must respect the student\u2019s wish for confidentiality, despite the uneasiness this creates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Emergency Services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\u00a0Counseling Services professional\u00a0is on-call 24 hours\u00a0a day.
