{"id":1409,"date":"2021-08-09T18:39:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T22:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/?page_id=1409"},"modified":"2021-08-13T13:10:04","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T17:10:04","slug":"residence-hall-directors-referral-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/counselingservices\/residence-hall-directors-referral-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Residence Hall Directors Referral Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When a Student May Need Counseling:&nbsp; A Guide for Residence Hall Directors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some signs that&nbsp; indicate a student may be experiencing more stress than she\/he can handle are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Marked decline in quality of course work, class participation, quality of papers or test results.<\/li><li>Increased absence from class or failure to turn work in.<\/li><li>Chronic fatigue and low energy.<\/li><li>Attention and memory difficulties.<\/li><li>Low self-esteem and prolonged depression, suggested by a sad expression, apathy, weight loss, sleep difficulties, or tearfulness.<\/li><li>Nervousness, agitation, excessive worry, irritability and sudden outbursts of anger, threats of harming others, aggressiveness, or nonstop talking.<\/li><li>Abrupt or radical changes in behavior or bizarre behavior, speech, writing, or thinking.<\/li><li>Abnormal eating or exercise behaviors.<\/li><li>Alcohol and other drug abuse.<\/li><li>Isolation from others.<\/li><li>Extreme dependency on faculty, staff, or community leader, including spending much of his\/her spare time visiting during office hours or at other times.<\/li><li>Marked changes in personal hygiene.<\/li><li>Talk of suicide, either directly or indirectly, such as \u201cI won\u2019t be around to take that exam anyway\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m not worried about getting a job, I won\u2019t need one.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You should consider referring a student for counseling when:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You believe a student\u2019s problems go beyond your own experience and expertise.<\/li><li>A student indicates she\/he is looking for someone to talk to.<\/li><li>You are extremely busy or are experiencing stress in your own life. and are unable or unwilling to handle the student\u2019s needs.<\/li><li>You have talked to the student and helped as much as you can but further assistance is needed.<\/li><li>You think that your personal feelings about the student would interfere with your ability to be helpful.<\/li><li>The student admits there is a problem but does not want to talk to you about it.<\/li><li>The student asks for information or assistance that you are unable to provide.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples of issues that often prompt referral to a counselor include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Social\/personal concerns, Career choices\/selecting a major<\/li><li>Stress, Depression, General anxiety<\/li><li>Identity development\/individuation<\/li><li>Substance abuse, Sexual assault<\/li><li>Relationship concerns, Racial\/cultural adjustments<\/li><li>Extreme test anxiety, Grief\/loss (including loss of a romantic relationship)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>:&nbsp; In general, a referral is appropriate if a student\u2019s problems have compromised his or her ability to function academically, personally,&nbsp; socially, or to take pleasure in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way of introducing the topic of a referral to Counseling Services is to summarize for the student what you see as the content of the problem.&nbsp; Point out the emotional responses that you have heard from the student, perhaps with an expression of concern.&nbsp; For example, \u201cYou sound very upset about that\u201d,&nbsp; \u201cI have found that other students who have felt that way have benefited from talking to someone at Counseling Services\u201d. \u201c How would you feel about that?\u201d&nbsp; Above all, it is critical to communicate your concern respectfully, sensitively, and in a way that honors the autonomy and self-efficacy of the person you are referring.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a Student May Need Counseling:&nbsp; A Guide for Residence Hall Directors Some signs that&nbsp; indicate a student may be experiencing more stress than she\/he can handle are: Marked decline in quality of course work, class participation, quality of papers or test results.
